
Michael Kantor studied physics and mathematics at Cornell University, and received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan, where his teaching earned him the graduate school's Outstanding Teaching Assistant award. He has taught mathematics at the college level since 1986, at Knox and Guilford colleges and at the universities of Michigan and Wisconsin. From 2001 to 2005, he directed the mathematics and physical science courses in UW's Independent Learning program. Dr. Kantor is no longer involved in the day-to-day operation of Independent Learning mathematics courses.
The symbols of mathematics, like the notes of music, are in themselves merely an artificial, intrinsically meaningless script. They will convey life, meaning, richness of thought and beauty only if the ideas and the thinking which the symbols merely record are taught with as little use of symbolism as possible. Morris Kline
